I loved Sherazade. It was the best program and so well skated. Tessa and Scott were awesome and a great program but Charlie and Meryl had that magic. Sorry you are upset Canear but I am like Toller Cranston and don't always go for country in skating. If a program moves me I don't care what flag they are carrying. Used to get into fights with my parents for that.

Well Kate just don't go cheering for the US against Canada in hockey! That would definitely be cause for deportation!  Wink

I will always believe what I believe. Nothing will change it........just as many here believe Paul Wylie was robbed that year.

I don't have to have followed someone for years to think that a statement about you being the best in the world etc. makes you sound full of yourself.

I heard that Meryl and Charlie have been undefeated in any event for the past two years.  Seems like the best won to me and that their win is unsurprising and expected  shrugging    Didn't the Canadian couple win the gold last Olympics?  I think I heard that.  If true than they have been rewarded and respected.

The difference is Paul had a perfect skate and the winner had a poor skate.  That is not what happened in this ice dancing event.  The winners did amazing.

I didn't find anything wrong with what Patrick said. He has been the best in the world. He didn't say anything that wasn't true and I certainly don't think he meant it to be taken as his being self centered or full of himself because he is anything but that. Patrick has always been very gracious.

I think it's important to note in times like this just to make it known even though it probably is already without saying so how emotions are simply so incredibly high right now. For those of us who have followed figure skating very closely year in and year out we're so into it and have developed such strong and deep connections to some of these athletes. When they don't receive what we want for them and feel they deserve it's disappointing and very upsetting. It's going to take time to come down from that but it might continue to remain a very sore spot long after it's all said and done.

Canear wrote: I will always believe what I believe. Nothing will change it........just as many here believe Paul Wylie was robbed that year.

Canear things are totally different with Paul and with Tessa & Scott.  Paul skated pretty much clean,he had a little bobble on the triple sou but nothing huge,(he stayed on his feet unlike Victor who fell down), and one other bobble and was the only skater of the night to have the crowd with him the whole time and the only skater to get a standing ovation.  Paul did all required stuff had amazing beautiful artistry, amazing speed on the ice and and stayed on his feet.  When he was most tired he did three Russian splits toward the end of the routine.  It was amazing.  Victor was slow during his performance, had some minor bobbles, popped a jump and fell after a jump and many people that were there said it just was not a very inspired skate.  It was old scoring system and Paul was in third so he could have caught Victor to win the Gold and Paul's skate was good enough for that but he got underscored for his pretty clean performance giving him the Silver and Victor got overscored for a program that was marred with a huge fall.  Christine Brennan wrote a book about skating and the story of Paul and Victor was in there.  She spoke to some of the judges that did the judging and there was two of them that were afraid of giving Paul better marks cause they didn't want to get in trouble.  One of those judges was the lone american judge on the panel who only spoke english while the others spoke different languages and did talk to each other.  Christine also spoke to many skaters those that were just there to watch and ones that were competing and all but a few said they believe Paul deserved that Gold medal and should have got it.  Brian Orser said Paul was robbed!  Scott Hamilton who called the programs that night thought the judges would see Paul in a different light after he had such a wonderful short and amazing Long but they didn't and stayed true to form and underscored the performance.  Christine talked to coaches of skaters that were there that night and most said the only reason Paul didn't have that Gold medal was because he was not a National champion or World medalist.  They said Victor got the gold because of his resume of being a Olympic Bronze Medalist, A National champion and a World Medalist.  They said his long program did not deserve the gold.  With Tessa and Scott it had nothing to do with the technical stuff in their program cause it was clean just like Meryl and Charlie's was.  With that said they had to go with artistic and had to go with what moved them.  Meryl and Charlie's performances they liked more.  as Johnny and Tara said earlier in Ice dancing it is very subjective since so many of the ice dancers technical stuff is so equal they have to go on the actual dance and as Tara said it turns to what touches you, what impacts you.  Not like in the Male, Female and Pairs where you are easily able to deduct for stuff in the technical but the artistic also.

Canear another thing Tessa and Scott have National titles, World titles and a Olympic Gold medal(on their home ice which is the most amazing thing for any athlete cause they get to share that amazing feat with their country men and women).  Paul has three National silvers and two National bronze.  He skated two of his best skates of his whole career at the Albertville games that would of garnered anybody else a Gold but was given the Silver.  It is wonderful cause he was expected to not even medal and it capped off his career on a high point but during pro shows in the past when they had Paul against Victor and they would show their skates from 92 it is so freaking obvious that Paul should be the Gold medalist.  Also Victor has said he hated having to do those shows where he was up against Paul cause he felt he had something to prove.  Why say something like that if you know in your heart you deserved that medal?  I totally believe Victor knew that he should have had Silver and Paul Gold.

In closing canear I have posted both of Paul's performances and Victor's long.  look at the performances on both and then check out the judges marks for both.  Victor got a lot of 5.9's in there for a sloppy skate with a fall on a jump.

Paul's short program:  He was so good and he was given a 5.3 from one judge and that is crazy!

Paul's long program: one of the judges gave him a freaking 5.4 for a skate with no fall.  His artistic scores should have been 5.8's and 5.9's across the board.  Honestly he deserved a 6.0 for artistry but I know getting a 6.0 at the Olympics was hard to do.

victor's long program: Stale program used for three years running,(90,91 and 92)

No one has ever been as robbed as Paul Wiley. That was a travesty.

There was an investigation (if I remember correctly and one judge sanctioned)

Totally agree with all you stated Angel!

I am sure Patrick is a great guy, but for ME I hate when people says things like they are the very best in the world. Always have and always will.  Give the winner their dues, say you know you are a better skater than you showed at the event, even say you are a great skater.  But stating you are the best in the world at something just rubs me the wrong way and always will.  I would never say something like that about myself ever because I know how it comes off.  And how has he "changed the sport"??  Kate and I find him boring so what has he changed in the sport????  I didn't see anything spectacular or incredible or so amazing or different?  Not being mean - just asking.  How did he change the sport??? shrugging  Something with quads?  I just don't know.

Hathor is right.  There was an investigation!  There will not be one in this case as there is no reason.

Canear, I am sorry you are upset, but in this case I just don't think anything wrong happened.

As far as Patrick, sorry you are upset about his loss also.  But like Kate, he just doesn't hold any appeal to me at all.  Just no personality on the ice at all.  I don't have to watch people for years to know what appeals to me.  Loved Jason from the first skate!  Loved Gracie from the first skate I saw.  Love the little Russian girl from the first skate.  Someone grabs you or they don't.

I'm moving on to hockey where it could get really nasty .........  Twisted Evil

FWIW I didn't call him arrogant.  I said comments like that make one come off as arrogant.  You and Kate stated he has been called arrogant in the past.  So sometimes he must give off that vibe or why has he been called that before shrugging  Not expecting an answer, just saying you yourself said he has been called that before.

When does ladies skating begin??

Yes, come on hockey! USA won again!!

Kate's response to my question of "Who called Patrick arrogant?"

Quote :
Not here FC but there have been things in the press over the years since he lost out in Vancouver in 2010.

I asked because of this post from you.

Quote :
I cannot blame Patrick for being dismayed. The pressure in this country for a male skater to win an Olympic medal is immense. Look at those who have tried and failed. Please don't consider him arrogant because of this.

Personally, I understand Patrick's comments.  He has won the worlds and has been considered the best skater.  IMO he was just trying to make himself feel better by stating what he accomplished so he wouldn't feel so badly loosing the gold.  Seriously do any of us have the drive to devote our entire lives to a sport.  The training and such to be in contention for the gold?  To work years for that goal and then to just barely miss it?  shrugging  I know I do not.

I can see Canear's dismay because the Japanese skater had two huge falls and Patrick only put his hand down but did not fall.  Two huge falls to me should lower marks much more than a hand down.
But that is me.

Patrick is all about edges and truly classical skating.  The Japanese Skater was about emoting, speed and jumps.   No one today has better edges than Patrick.

The Japanese kids short with the River Dance section was amazing.  His free skate nothing special.

Actually, the Hockey Finals have me worried if the skating has caused such hurt to some.

We need to remember we are friends and will remain friends (hopefully) after Olympics or Stanley Cup or Super Bowl is over.  Yep we all get personally invested.  But for me anyway friendships are more important than rubbing it in that my team won.  I am not saying anyone did that but just to be mindful of opposing positions of our friends.  Imagine if your team or fav lost vs won how would you be feeling?

But Patrick had way more issues than just a "hands down".

Yes, we are all friends and I don't think that will change.  And I am not the only one saying something negative.  Implying Meryl and Charlie only won because of some collusion isn't a very nice thing to say either. Especially when they clearly skated amazingly.

MY personal OPINION is one shouldn't say things like "I am the best in the world". I MYSELF find that very off putting.  If Adam ever said in an interview he was "the greatest singer in the world" or the "greatest singer Idol ever had"  I would totally cringe and want to smack him upside the head!  I don't mind if he THINKS he is the greatest singer in the world.  Just please don't say it in an interview.

Remember, a lot of people in the world are watching the Olympic sports that they don't normally watch.  Seeing athletes they don't ever see.  So we go by what we see in the interviews of these folks that normally we would never see. So the impressions from these interviews are all they have.

Angel, very cool about USA vs. Canada!!  Hoping it comes down to them in the men's hockey too!!

FC, I understand. I do. We all have opinions. Often our opinions are the same and sometimes opposing. Kindness and Understanding go a long way.

Personally things have been said here in regards to Tom Brady, Patriots and Bruins that has hurt.
I shake it off but I think when things get heated we all should put ourselves in the others shoes.

Yep what Patrick said turned you off. I understand but someone who knows him beyond that statement might take offense.

You did not appreciate Richard Sherman's reaction to Crabtree in the NFC Championship. I could see he came off like an ass but I know he is a really good guy. Spirited with a lack of a filter but an excellent football player and good citizen giving boatloads to community.

I just fear that with our Canadian friends here and the likelihood it will be USA vs Canada in Hockey
in the semi or finals, we need to just be understanding. A win for us is heartbreak for them and a win for them is heartbreak for us.
