‘REVENGE’: THREE JUICY TEASES!

For this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, I got a chance to hop on the phone with the master of Revenge, executive producer Mike Kelley. And in our chat, he gave away a few juicy teases that I thought I’d share with you! Behold!

* On the uber-creepy Tyler, Kelley said the Talented Mr. Ripley-inspired character will very soon “make things very difficult for a lot of people.” “I think what you’ll find with Tyler is that this is somebody that not only wants to be friends with Daniel Grayson, but he wants to BE Daniel Grayson. So the Tyler arc is a very strong one and he gets in there and starts to take over Daniel’s role inside the Grayson family as Daniel starts to marginalize himself with his budding relationship with Emily.” And if that’s not enough, Kelley teases that an upcoming arc will find Nolan, Ashley and Tyler involved in a “triangle”. I can only assume he means a love triangle, but you never know with this show.

* Craving more Nolan? You’re not alone. And soon, Kelley says the true past that Nolan shares with Emily’s father will come to light. “He knows a lot more than Emily thinks he does” says Kelley. As a matter of fact, he knows things that she doesn’t know. So you’re going to find out that Nolan himself has a bit of a motivation that informs the future story of Revenge in a big way.”

* Prepare yourself… for episode 7. “Something very, very big and very permanent will happen to one of our core cast members in episode 7. It’s going to really push the show up a level in the stakes,” explains Kelley. I shudder with excitement.




Revenge's Gabriel Mann Teases an 'Explosive' Takedown: 'It Really Ups the Ante!'

We’ve adored Emily VanCamp since she went by Amy Abbott in the tiny town of Everwood. But Revenge‘s Gabriel Mann only recently popped up on our radar in a big way (though he has been in everything from The Bourne Identity films to Mad Men).

What’s the deal with Mann’s endearing yet slimy Nolan? Can we really trust him? We spoke with the Revenge scene-stealer about all of that and more. Come conversation’s end, we were more excited than ever for the addictive ABC series’ all-new installment (airing Wednesday at 10/9c).

TVLINE | What’s next for the deliciously scheming Nolan?
Episode 5 is totally explosive! It really ups the ante to a completely different level. It’s no longer Emily locking people in storage containers and taking their money; it’s now a much more dangerous place. We’ll also see the return of [adulterous socialite] Lydia Davis, who is played by the amazing Amber Valletta. And Nolan, who is usually peeking in from the sidelines, gets stuck right in the middle of all of it.

TVLINE | So, more Nolan — that’s a good thing!
Yes, more Nolan. Episode 7 will then involve the start of Nolan’s own take-down — and that’s as much as I can say about that. [laughs]

TVLINE | Can we trust Nolan? As a fan of the character, I want to say yes, but he’s still a bit of a question mark.
You can trust that he will do something trustworthy, and then follow that up with something untrustworthy. [laughs] The writers only give us half an inch — we’re as hungry for any information as you guys are. I’m just trying to leave enough room in his portrayal that it could go in any number of directions, and I’m happy to go there. Likely though, we’ll go in all directions with it.

TVLINE | Are we going to learn more about Nolan’s motivations for pushing Jack and Emily together? It seems counterproductive, given his desire to earn Emily’s trust….
This is what happens when you have too much money — he gets bored and just wants to stir the pot. There are definitely deeper motivations for him because there is a genuine backstory with Nolan and Amanda’s father, David (played by James Tupper). Nolan is this weird dichotomy; he’s a study in ambiguity, which is why he’s a brilliant character to get to play. He has all this money and power and yet he’s very insecure and weak — that’s his fatal flaw. He’ll do anything to have a connection with other people, and yet he doesn’t need it because he’s in a glass tower already. That said, he’s fascinated with Emily because she’s the person who understands him most. No one else wants to give him the time of day and her mind works like his. Nolan is seeing how far he can push before she chokes him out again. Coming up there’s definitely going to be something deserving of a choking out, to say the least. I had to pick my jaw up off the table when they told me.

TVLINE | Were you at all aware of the scope of Nolan’s involvement in the world of Revenge when you took the role? He seemed much more surface-level in the pilot.
I had no idea. All I knew was that I had this audition for a great series…and I wanted to take a risk and go full-throttle. All that [the producers] had said in the casting byline for the character was that Nolan “dresses for sh–t,” so I took that in the opposite direction: I wore a red plastic windbreaker, a dirty shirt and shoes and ugly flannel pants hanging off my butt…. And then after I got the part, I went in for my first wardrobe fitting and there were all these fancy suits. They then told me I got the role in spite of what I wore to the audition. [laughs] Initially, my take on Nolan was different, but we’ve melded those two worlds into one now.

TVLINE | Well, congratulations on Revenge‘s much-deserved success — and the full-season pickup!
We’re all so happy, just here supporting each other. It’s like the bottomless cup of coffee — the gift that keeps on giving.

I have been loving the new promo spot they've been airing for the show. It's all based around the Daniel/Emily/Jack.love triangle. The promo features Adele's "Turning Tables". Has anyone else seen it? It's pretty awesome!

I have not seen it. I taped tonight's episode as I was so tired I fell asleep! I knew it would happen so I started my tape going during "Happy Endings" and sure enough I woke up at the end of the 10:00 news! These boys are wearing me out!

Yes it was Sky!! It's getting more messy and more messy means MORE interesting. Emily sure has her hands full trying to deal with Tyler and now Frank all the while keeping her plan intact.

It's going to get a bit difficult for her!! I wish she could tell (her childhood sweetie, forgot his name) who she really is though.

Loved that actor when he was on Roswell! So happy to see him again and he looks even more handsome!! I am dying for him and Emily to get together!

I've been trying to find the commercial I've been seeing the last two days but it doesn't seem to be anywhere online. I'm going to keep looking though and if I find it I'm bringing it over!

Yep Emily was definitely very torn last night. She desperately wanted to say something but couldn't or wouldn't. Eventually she's going to have to break. It's just a matter of time.

Hey I don't know about anyone else but going back to the pilot when they started out with the "future" did anyone maybe get the feeling the hooded guy could have been Jack? Just a thought.

I thought maybe Tyler or Nolan. Emily didn't seem surprised or concerned which is why I thought it was a deal with Nolan. But then with Tyler being a nutjob who seems to want Daniel's life - maybe him

But Nolan was there at the party. He wasn't out on the beach.

Tyler is definitely a real possibility. The guy is off the charts crazy.

But is it possible that there was enough time between the shot and when he was found for Nolan to get into the house? I suppose it won't be Nolan though. Tyler would make more sense and he could be written off easier as I do not think he is meant to be long term on the show.

Yeah, I don't see Tyler being a long term either, but I think he's going to be around for a while yet.

I watched last week's episode last night. It was definitely not short of intrigue. I find it interesting that we get to see how Amanda became Emily. Hmmm.

Last night's show was great!! Looks like Emily has got another problem person to deal with now. Once one gets figured out another has got to come in it's place. I wonder how she's going to handle this new wrench in her plans.
