I thought it was a very good episode. Pete and Trudy were so cute doing the Charleston at Roger's party. And I loved Peggy reassuring Olive that everything was going to be okay and not to worry about her.

Oh and the guy Don was talking to at the bar? That was supposed to be Conrad Hilton who was the greatgrandfather of Paris Hilton. Also one of Zsa Zsa's ex-husbands and father of her only child Francesca and the father of Elizabeth Taylor's first husband.

Gee Badger - you always have so many facts!

I had a feeling the man behind the bar was someone important.

Yes, I LOVED when Peggy was reassuring Olive. Very touching moment.

I felt bad for Trudy when everyone was talking about Betty being pregnant.

Well, someone on another board was the one who suggested that "Connie" might be Conrad Hilton. And then someone else said that his reference to being born in New Mexico before it was a state definitely fit Conrad Hilton's life. Also, Matt Weiner confirmed it. But I knew the gossipy stuff!

Poor Joan. It looks like maybe her dream of being a well-to-do doctor's wife living in the suburbs might be farther away than she thought at first. She could do her husband a lot of good if he would just let her. But he is so controlling that I doubt if he will.

Or how about Roger and Jane? On the surface, he seems ecstatically happy. But how much of it is an act because he might realize that while his wife is young and beautiful, she doesn't quite fit in. And maybe she's drinking too much and not eating because she realizes she doesn't fit in. Maybe her exploiting her status to Joan was more of a defense mechanism than anything else.

Yes, that whole scene with Joan was sad and uncomfortable. I fear their marriage is about to get rocky.

Oh I think there are going to be some interesting things going on with Roger and Jane's marriage. HA - maybe Roger and Joan will seek comfort in each other Razz I always felt those two never totally got over each other.

One thing you have to say for Joan: she's always appropriate. Roger has a certain position in society and if she were his wife, she would never get falling down drunk at a party they were hosting. Joan's not perfect, but she knows the rules.

What did you think of Roger's blackface routine? A lot of people think it was racist, but I'm not sure. The party had an Old South theme and I'm guessing Roger saw it as just part of the theme. Pete and Don didn't like it though.

Black face comedy was pretty common for that time. Now of course it is not acceptable. I was uncomfortable when I first saw it - but remembering what era this show takes place in it fit the Old South Theme.

At this point in the 1960's though, that kind of humor was becoming less and less accepted. But at the same time, African-Americans were not a part of the social milieu Roger came from so it would probably never occur to him that anyone would be offended.

It made me uncomfortable watching that blackface. It is just something I cannot fathom was ever acceptable. But sadly I suppose it was. Boy Don does not like Roger's wife at all, does he?

I think Joan's marriage is about to blow up in her face. She is way too good for him anyway.

The plot with Don and Betty's kid stealing her Grandpa's money was pretty funny. He knew she took it.

I love the actress who plays the little girl. There is just something about her and she really "seems" and looks just like a kid from the 60s!

Joan is too good for anybody on that show!! Twisted Evil

The ironic thing about blackface is that African-American entertainers also used it because the whole idea was to make a sort of cartoonish version of a black person for comic effect.

One example of an African-American entertainer who performed in blackface is Bert Williams who was a huge vaudeville star. Ben Vereen later did a tribute to him which included blackface on a televised Boston Pops concert; the performance was critically and commercially well-received. So well-received that he was invited to do it for the Reagans at Ronald Reagan's first Inaugural Gala. That caused a great deal of controversy with Mr. Vereen getting a lot of flak for perpetrating stereotypes, etc. Mr. Vereen pointed out that he was doing a tribute to Bert Williams who did use blackface at one point in his career so he felt it was appropriate to do so himself as part of that tribute.

Well, I agree with Mr. Vereen there. It was appropriate for the tribute.

I will have to look and see if there is a You Tube of that.

Getting back to the show, I was thinking that maybe tonight the show would either be pre-empted or be a re-run since it's a holiday weekend, but they will be showing a new episode tonight.

I saw it on Sunday. Gene's death was certainly surprising and I agree the actress playing Sally did a great job this episode. God, what a cold unfeeling bitch Betty is. Somebody on another board (I think it was the Salon Table Talk board or maybe Datalounge) pointed out that right after Betty told Gene she was his "little girl", the camera panned over her so that you could see she was a full-grown pregnant woman in an over-sized muu muu and not a child.

Do you think Kitty Romano is finally buying a clue about Sal?

Man, David Selby got old, didn't he? He was the one playing Horace Sr. and complaining about his loser son "Ho Ho" and his jai alai dreams.

Peggy is still trying to figure out a way to be focused on her career, but at the same time being a young single girl who wants to have fun.

Yes, Betty is a piece of work. I can't really figure her out totally.

I do think Kitty is buying a clue about Sal. Should be interesting. I wonder how it will all pan out.

Badger - I nearly fell over when I saw David Selby!!! Oh how I loved my Quentin Collins!! SO handsome! I knew the voice right away - but had a hard time with the face. The I yelled out loud DAVID SELBY??? WOW!

I just adore both Peggy and Elizabeth Moss! There is something so realy about Elizabeth. You really forget it's an actress and you totally believe you are seeing Peggy.

OMG!!! That was David Selby!! I thought this was a great episode. I was so sad for the little girl. She certainly got no comfort from her so called Mother. Lord Betty needs another kid like a hole in the head.
Oh yeah Kitty is getting a clue. I would not care he is SO GORGEOUS , I would just stay right there with him.

I Think Elizabeth Moss is one of the best actors working on tv today. I really hope she wins that Emmy.

I hope she wins too Aerwin! She has some tough competition though. Storyline has so much to do with it. But Emmy loves Mad Men - so we shall see in a few weeks!!

You think Sal is gorgeous? I enjoy the actor and the character - but I don't find him gorgeous. For me the only gorgeous one is Jon Hamm/Don Drapper!!!

I don't think Bryan Batt or rather Sal Romano is necessarily handsome. I think he'd be described as someone who "makes a nice appearance". You know, well-groomed, well-dressed, keeps reasonably fit.
