Yay Matthew cheers cheers cheers cheers   So happy for him.  He better win the Oscar.  He did so much for this role even going way too thin just so he really looked the part and made it believable.  People say Matthew just plays Matthew but that is not true.  Check out A Time To Kill, Amistad, The Lincoln Lawyer, Mud, Contact, Ring Of Fire, Frality.  He is a very talented actor and him finally getting a Oscar Nomination shows that his talent is finally getting noticed.  Jennifer Garner has played in two movies with Matthew one was a comedy/romance,(Ghost of Girlfriends Past), and the more serious Dallas Buyers Club.  She said his performances in the two movies was awesome to see cause of how serious he went into each role.  She said he worked so hard to do proper justice to his roles especially for the Dallas Buyers Club since it was such a tough role.  She said she admires him.  Sandra Bullock has said the same thing about him.  She was in A Time To Kill with him.

My favorite movies of his are:
A Time To Kill
How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days
The Wedding Planner
Lincoln Lawyer
Failure To Launch
Ghost of Girlfriends Past
We Are Marshall
Contact

Congrats to Matthew

Eta: Just so it is known Jared Leto was on the TV Show Party Of Five.  He played the boyfriend of Neve Campbell's character. He was also on My So Called Life in which he played the boyfriend of Claire Danes character,  He was on both those shows before he started his band.

Yes I know!!!! I have adored Jared since those shows, especially My So Called Life!!!  Gorgeous, talented and sweet man!! I will be jumping all over the house if he actually does win the Oscar!!!! He is the front runner and he is winning ALL the awards leading up to the Oscars!  I have him as my avi and siggy in support of him!! Heck he is so gorgeous I will probably keep them even afterwards!

I read an article that says the SAG award is the best indicator of who will win the Oscar since that is voted on my the actors - not the press or critics like the other awards.  So last night the wins for both Jared and Matthew are HUGE!

I want Mathew to win the Oscar with all my heart!  He seems like just the coolest sweetest guy to boot!

Leo is a wonderful actor who I also have always loved - since Growing Pains - but the film he is nominated for is sickening in my opinion.  Making fun of people with Downs and CP just pushed me over the edge.  I want Leo to get his Oscar, but NOT for this film.  And I saw an interview with him and he is the producer and HE wanted it as graphic and nasty as possible. I just cannot respect that.  It changes my opinion of him as a human being - especially the making fun of people with disabilities done with comedy.  I had a good friend with a brother with Downs (we lost tough after HS) and a neighbor in Carol Stream with a child with CP.  It's a real hot button for me.

I do understand some films "need" for sex and nudity to tell the story, but as a comedy?  And SOOOO much of it?  and 506 f-bombs? And orgies and masturbation,  and shoving candles in butts and I am guess douching since I saw a critic said the movie should be called "Douche Porn"  shrugging  Or maybe he meant it is porn and the lead character is a douche bag???  Anyway, just way too much yuck factor for me.

Last night's SAG loss for J-Law makes me think she will not get the Oscar.  I think it will go to the young actress from 12 Years a Slave.  I think that will probably win best picture too.

So come bring on the Oscars!!!

This is from a review for Dallas Buyers Club and I feel the last line does a great job stating how I feel things should be handled in a film.

Quote :

This movie is wonderful. It contains all the elements of a great movie. It has a strong script, excellent acting, compelling themes and terrific cinematography. This movie contains what is probably Matthew McConaughey's best performance. He carries the movie. He is in just about every scene. The movie deals with several themes - AIDS, terminal illness, government regulations, response to crisis, change of life issues, homosexuality, promiscuity, personal responsibility, and capitalism. All these themes are treated forthrightly. After watching this movie, one should come away with a better understanding and appreciation of the issues raised. But although the movie touches on themes that have political implications, it is first and foremost a drama. Although the movie takes some literary license, such as frank depictions of sickness and drug abuse, none of it is gratuitous. That is, it adds to the story.

FC While I accept your opinion of the Wolf of Wall Street, it is a period piece a true story.
Sadly, those things happened and at that time people were very callous about those with disabilities.
Thus laws were enacted.

Do you feel the same about all period pieces, like My Life as a Slave? How blacks were raped, whipped
and treated? They make me sad. But that is the truth as to how it was in those days.

Congrats to Matthew and Jared.

My Life as a Slave is a drama and does make people think and feel horrible.

Wolf is done as a comedy and that people are laughing their heads off at this stuff bothers me greatly.

I saw an interview done with critics in England laughing at "what a spazz he was trying to get into his car when he was so wasted" and they were laughing while saying that.  So yeah, that bugs me.

And I doubt in Slave women are walking around naked just to be naked.

I saw a movie on LMN the other night about child abuse.  The father took the child in another room and you heard the child screaming.  It was chilling, you got the point.  You did not need to see the child beaten (which I wouldn't be able to take anyway) to understand.

I understand they wanted show the assholeness of this guy, but it seriously didn't need to be so incredible graphic, especially as a comedy.  I feel if this were Tom Cruise instead of Leo people here would agree with me.  But it is Leo so he is getting a pass for such a vulgar movie.

FC you do know that Matthew is in Wolf Of Wall ST. right?  As I have posted before I have no problem Leo,(or Matthew), being in that movie being that character since I know he is only playing a character.  Will I go see the movie?  No cause it is just not my type of movie.  Matthew was in a movie called Killer Joe and I will never see that one soooooooooooooooooooo not my thing at all but I have heard Matthew is really good in the lead even as the bad guy.  I know he is only playing a character so I will not upset that he is playing that animal.  When a favorite actor of mine is in movies I despise I just do not go see them.  Seriously I hate Horror and slash films but actors and actresses I like are in them and do grusome stuff at times but I know it is not really them so it is fine.

If Tom Cruise would of done the role Leo is doing I would feel the same thing.  He is playing a character.  Not crazy about Tom's real life but he is a great actor one of the best.

I am a fan of Nicole Kidman but will not see the movie Paperpoy cause I have heard she has to do some yucky stuff to Zac Efron who I adore but i have heard she was really good in the role she played.  Matthew was also in that movie and as I said I am passing on it.

You know, when we see love stories we know the couple has sex.  We don't need to see every single sex act the people do to each other to appreciate the story.  Same with Wolf.  Do people really need to see every single type of depraved activity portrayed graphically to get the point? Do we need to hear the F-word 506 times to know they had potty mouths?  And since it is done as this "uproarious" comedy is it really teaching anybody anything about these people or just appealing to the college guys getting off on the endless parade of naked hot babes in threesomes and orgies?

And I am not saying that I think all films have to teach something or be respectful.  But I myself do feel that is important in Oscar contenders.  For me, I would like Leo's Oscar win to be for a wonderful film.  Not a sleazy film.

Angel, as I have stated before I have no issue with Leo playing a sleazy character or horrible person.  My issue is how far this movie went with the graphic sex, nudity, and ridicule as a COMEDY.  People are not walking away saying oh how sad or disgusting that man or lifestyle is.  They are talking about how funny he is.  They aren't talking how horrible it is making fun of people with disabilities - they are laughing at those scenes.  That is just sad.

And while Leo may be playing a role, he did produce it and he insisted it be as graphic as possible.  I don't get that and I don't respect that.  Just the way I feel.  He wants to make a raunchy film - fine.  But I don't want him getting an Oscar for it.

And yes, I am well aware Mathew is in the film.  So is Kyle Chandler, another of my all time fave actors.   They didn't produce it and they are not up for Oscars for it. And if they were, I wouldn't be rooting for them to win.

I am guessing since Leo is producer he is going with the Director and making it as true to life as possible. All this disgusting happened in real life so they are putting it out there. Do I like it? heck no I will not go see it but I can understand what they are doing and I can respect what they are doing cause that is their job. I guess I just try to separate my thinking on things like this. Many directors I like are making movies I will never ever see cause of what they are about but they are hired to do a job and I have to respect that.

And in the News thread we have been talking about Hollywood taking responsibility on the violence that is effecting young people. With your thinking it is that it HAS to be as realistic as possible to tell their story. Well that is the attitude Hollywood is taking with the violence. HAS to be realistic. I say bull. You can tell the story without it being as graphic as possible. Especially in a comedy. This isn't a docudrama. It's a comedy. And Leo's exact words were "I wanted it as graphic and explicit as possible." Not Martin wanted it that way.

Martin is director so if he did not agree with Leo he could of said no. Director trumps producer.

I don't like violence in movie but I do see why some movies have to put a lot of it in it. Some people have said the movie about a war wasn't realistic enough cause there wasn't enough violence in it. I know war is violent so I understood for the most part what they were speaking of. I don't like seeing big time violence or sex or major nudity that is one reason I don't go to a lot of rated R movies. Also horror movies make me sick and give me night mares so I won't see them cause of that but they are full of violence, sex and nudity a lot of the times. Just because I understand and try to respect what the movie makers and actors are doing doesn't mean I condone any of it. Like I said I just have to respect what they are being paid to do.

But porn stars are paid and we don't need to respect them Laughing

Sorry, but it this case Leo made the kind of movie I despise - degrading to women and people with disabilities so I don't want to see him rewarded for that type of film.

And do people really feel there is a HUGE need for graphic realistic scenes in COMEDY?

And I can sure understand films about the holistic without actually watching bodies burn.  I don't understand people who want/need that kind of realistic.

To me Porn is not acting and it makes me sick and saddened what people do to lure people into doing it.  I have read articles from women that did this and they all pretty much said the same thing.  They didn't have much,(most that do porn are young teens and young adults), and these men directors lured them in by saying they could have a better life so when they went in they were pampered and got all kinds of stuff and then when they were told what they were going to be doing they said it was too late to look back and just did it without really realizing what it was all about.  They said at first it wasn't so bad but after a while they got so used it that it was hard to say no and get out.  Many of them got hooked onto drugs that were given them so to keep their habit going they had to continue.  There are some ex porno people that have been on talk shows that say they may go back into the porno business cause they make a lot of money there and those are the only jobs they can get.  I don't respect these people but I feel badly for them.  If those douche people would of never brought them  into that life then maybe they would know better.  Oh also in porns the sex and stuff is real and I really don't condone this cause many of the porn people have got aids and STD's cause many times they don't use condoms,(disgusting).  So PORN I wish would go away and I wish the douche bags that do it would go to jail cause they are just using these people.  Porn is not filmmaking it is a sex rings in my opinion and people who watch it are gross.

ETA: also there is a difference between comedy and black/dark comedy and Wolf is a black/dark comedy

Dark comedy
Web definitions
a comedy characterized by grim or satiric humor; a comedy having gloomy or disturbing elements

most times when you hear Dark comedy you know it is not going to be all clean. Take Fargo. It was a dark comedy but it was about murder. not my type of movie for sure just as wolf isn't.

I want to see Wolf of Wall Street. From working in the industry and keeping up with the greed of Wall Street and the stock market business around the world. I just feel more passion for Dallas Buyers Club and how the making of the movie came about. Matthew did do some fluffy movies but they were good and but he needed to stretch as an actor like he did in some of his early movies. It took his wife to push him to get his ass in gear and go after some more juicy roles.

I did read a good article from Tommy Chong whose cellmate in Prison was Leo's character in Wolf On Wall Street. http://ca.news.yahoo.com/video/culture-violence-155905673.html?vp=1 Tommy helped him with his writing and that scamming people was not the way to be happy in life.

I love Fargo. I do have a dark side. The bad guys did get caught and poor Steve Buscemi got chopped up in the wood chipper. Frances McDormand was fantastic as the Sherriff. We need more strong women roles like that.
