Oh, that is really neat. I'd love to do something like that.

Thanks for the thread!

I have just barely, barely scratched the surface and I've come up with so much interesting stuff. I've been wanting to join Ancestry.com for a while and then on Easter we were at the cemetery where my mom's parents and my little brother are and I started thinking that I don't know where my paternal great-grandparents are buried. (My grandparents are in my living room *g*). So I asked my dad and he didn't know, so I started looking. Wow! Just with the most cursory of searches so far I've found out that my great-great grandparents and great-grandparents on my dad's side came to Cincinnati from Germany in 1868 and 1878, that my paternal great-grandmother's family can be traced back to England in 1485 and that my maternal great-grandmother was born in North Carolina not too far from Raleigh. (Her maiden name was Atkins so I figure hey, Atkins, Adkins, Aiken, I'm sure I'm related to Clay in some way). Wink Supposedly one of her grandparents was a Cherokee Indian so I'm really interested in following that line.

It's fascinating and VERY addictive!

ETA: The census records are SO interesting. I looked up Walt Disney on the 1930 census. Very cool.

Just so you know..............we had a small copy already.....I just had to draw it bigger and make and add some space to add the current family line to it. As it is, there is not much space left, so I'll have to copy it to a smaller size and then copy it to a larger paper. Thank goodness for Kinko!

That's beautiful the way that is done, Sky. Such a great thing to have all that information together.

Thank you FC. My little brother was born when I was 4 and only lived 3 hours. We have a disease that runs in our family called Potter's Syndrome where the baby's kidneys don't develop. (I was born with just one myself). Nowadays they can tell fairly on and the mothers have to terminate the pregnancy but my brother was born in 1974 and they didn't know until he was born.

If anybody has any geneology tips I'd love to hear them. As I said, I've just scratched the surface. I can't believe I didn't ask my grandma this stuff when she was here, she's only been gone two years this coming August.

That's so sad about your baby brother.

Since the original tree (we had a photo copy of it) already had it's shape, I only elongated it and added to my family side of the tree with the info my Aunt gave me. The whole left side is from Sweden, I think. I think it's great they also included everyone.

Since I didn't do any of the research, I really can't give you any tips, sorry. My cousin did say once though that you have to be careful because it's easy to be going down the wrong lines, some sources aren't always correct. But, then how do we really know?

Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing with it. I think mine goes back to the 1500's on the tree, but information has been found that goes back even further.

So sorry to hear about your poor little baby brother. How tough for your folks. Glad you are doing well!

My grandfather's side of the family is Swedish. (My mom's dad.) My grandmother's side of the family is both German and Mexican. (My mom's mom.) We know more about my grandfather's side though. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about my father's side of the family.

Cool about all the Swedish blood here! Well, I don't have any - but my hubby and boys do!

My dad was pure Polish. His folks came to this country a little while before he was born.

My mom's dad was Dutch and her mom was French. So I am Polish, French and Dutch. I dance the Polka in wooden shoes with black fishnet stockings Wink

What interesting backgrounds! So far I've got a lot of German, English, and Pennsylvania Dutch though I know there's a little Cherokee in there on my mother's side. I guess it would make sense to have a lot of German coming from "Zinzinnati!" I have a very German married name as well. It's kind of cool since Cincinnati does have such a rich German heritage.

If anybody's interested, you can do a 14-day free trial on ancestry.com. I have a week left on the free trial though I think I will buy a membership when that expires. But the census information is so very interesting. I was able to find out where my grandmother's ancestors lived right down to the street number and when I told my dad about it he said that's where he grew up and I don't think they moved around very much from that part of town. It's a not so great part of the inner city now but my dad is going to take us there and show it to us. My grandparents had moved by the time I was born so I never knew about any of this very much. It's really fascinating.

Oh, and my advice to youngin's like teddy, ASK your family members about this stuff while you have the chance! I can't believe I didn't think to ask my grandma about more of this while she was still with us.

We had a family reunion about 3 years ago, and my uncle decided to do some research on our family for it. We had always believed that we had been German immigrants living in the Ukraine before we came to America. However what my uncle found was that while we were German immigrants, we had not lived in the Ukraine. Instead, we were part of a program that Catherine the Great began where other Europeans were given land to farm in Southern Russia while still being able to maintain their own culture and traditions. One of my ancestors was a Cossack. My grandma used to say "All the Kramers have a mean streak. It's that Cossack blood." LOL!

My paternal grandmother's family was from Austria and Bohemia.

Both my paternal grandparents' families emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I know my grandfather was born in Russia as well as a couple of his brothers, but the rest of the family was born in America. My grandmother's family were all born in Wisconsin.

My mother's family was from Hokkaido, Japan. My grandmother was born in the Sakhalin Islands which at the time was considered part of Russia, mainly by the Russians. It's one of those places that wars were constantly fought over because two countries (in this case, Japan and Russia) wanted to claim it. I think now it is considered Japanese territory. Anyway, she was part Ainu which is the aboriginal Japanese people.

I don't know anything about my Japanese grandfather. He died when my mom was about 3 years old so she had no real memories of him.

Interestingly enough, one of my dad's uncles and one of my mom's brothers were both prisoners of war during World War II. Also my dad's only aunt who just passed away in August was working at Pearl Harbor when the bomb hit.

ITA with zara that any time you have an opportunity to speak with an older member of your family about family history or even just signicant historical events that they remember, you should definitely do it.

All of this geneology info is so interesting!

There is not much my dad's side has done on their tree. They all pretty much settled in Nebraska.

However, a second cousin of mine did my mom's whole family and made a beautiful book which she gave to everyone at our last Trautmann Family Reunion. I cherish that book and am very happy that cousin Cleo took the time to do so much research!

I'm half Polish ( dad's side ) and half German ( thus the Trautmann fam name ).

COOL! You are Polish on your Dad's side just like me! bounce

That was so awesome of your cousin!

My mom said my step uncle did one for my dad's side. My dad's mom died when he was 11 and his dad remarried a Polish woman with several children - hence step aunts and uncles. Uncle Raymond did it several years ago. Wonder if I could get him to send me a copy.

Yes, FC, I favor the Japanese side of my family except for the weight! Interestingly enough though, my mom's family was actually tall for Japanese. My mother was about 5 feet which is my height, but her mother was several inches taller and my dad said all her brothers were close to six feet. But my dad's family were all short with long torsos and very short sturdy legs and a tendency to overweight, so that's where I get that from.

Both my folks and their folks were short! I am 5'2". My mom 5'1" and my dad was 5'5". My dad's brother was shorter than me and one of his daughters is only 5 foot tall like you! So tiny!

Well, I think we are overweight simply because our containers are too short!!

So do you have the porcelain white skin and silky black hair so many Japanese women have??!! Evil or Very Mad

I do have dark hair although it is mostly gray now; I started going gray in college. No, I don't have the porcelain pale skin but then neither did my mom. Someone once told me my skin had a kind of olive-ish tone. It's funny but on my dad's side of the family it's pretty evenly divided between people with dark hair and eyes and dark/olive complexions and people with very pale skin, blue eyes and blond hair. It's also evenly divided between tallish thin people (usually but not always the blondes) and short stocky people (usually but not always the dark ones).

zara all my grandparents are already passed except for my grandmother on my dad's side. I don't have anybody else to ask questions to except for my aunts and uncles and I don't think they know more than I already do. I think someone somewhere has an in depth family tree based on my grandfather's side (mom) but I don't know.
