| Oh good! I am glad you enjoyed it. It is a nice read. I am so behind in reading it isn't funny. All the holidays and things going on and being so busy that I have only read the newspaper and some Mags because MIL is always giving me things like Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Readers Digest etc. and I love to read those and I hate for them to pile up - so I do keep up with those. I look forward to things quieting down so that I can get back to reading one of my books! _________________ "You can kinda just be. Just live your life -- and play." Adam Lambert - OUT mag. |

| I don't know if anyone else here likes baseball, but I like watching the playoffs and for a number of years the Yankees dominated the post seasons. I read Joe Torre's book "The Yankee Years" about a week ago and thought it was quite interesting. It's his viewpoint, so who he likes and dislikes is evident. A-Rod and Roger Clemens are in the book since they were/are part of those years. It will be interesting to see what happens with the Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds cases. The politics of the sport and ownership seems to be no different than corporate business. I also recently read "The Alchemist" and loved it. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." |

| Not a big baseball fan myself - though I do watch the playoffs when one of the Chicago teams are in them. Very exciting a few years back when the White Sox won the World Series. I find what is going on with so many of the baseball players and the use of performance enhancing drugs very sad indeed. The records they break are meaningless to me and I have no respect for them. Just the way I feel. I am sure it was quite an interesting book though! Sports is very much a big business. I have not heard of the other book you just read. Sadly, I do not seem to find the time to read enough books. I keep saying "one of these days!" _________________ "You can kinda just be. Just live your life -- and play." Adam Lambert - OUT mag. |

| Has anyone read "Caroline", that the movie is based on? I bought it the other day and it was in the children's/young reader section and I'm thinking about giving it to my granddaughter, who is 9. If you haven't read it, do you know what the age for the movie is? I'll check with her Mom first, but her Mom was going to let her read Twilight............ |

| "Coraline" the movie is rated PG. Here is the plot of the book: | Quote: | Before the tale begins, Coraline and her parents move into a new flat. Coraline's parents are always busy with their work and pay little attention to her. Isolated by this, Coraline goes off to explore. She meets the other inhabitants of the house, two elderly women retired from the stage and an even older man who trains mice, and finds a locked door in the drawing room, though the entrance beyond it is bricked up. The next day she takes the key to the door and opens it to find a dark corridor which leads to another apartment, duplicating her own. This alternate world is inhabited by her Other Mother and Other Father, who are near-replications of her real parents, with the exception of buttons for eyes. These Other parents seem at first to be more interesting, fun and caring duplicates of her real parents. At the day's end, Coraline is met on her way to the door by her Other Mother, who offers her a chance to stay in this world forever if only Coraline is willing to sew buttons over her eyes. Coraline decides she would rather go home, much to the disappointment of her Other Mother.
Upon her return to her flat, Coraline finds her real parents are missing. They do not return by the next day, and Coraline discovers that they have been kidnapped by her Other Mother, and resolves to rescue them. Coraline travels once more to the Other Mother's world. After angering her Other Mother by refusing to accept any gifts or love, she is trapped in a closet behind a mirror as punishment. There Coraline meets the souls of three other children from different eras whom the Other Mother has entrapped then tossed aside when she wearied of them. After leaving the room, Coraline challenges the Other Mother in a game to find the children's souls and her parents within the Other Parents' world, using her wits and a seeing stone given to her by her neighbors. Coraline finds the others' souls and escapes to the other world, forcing the door closed on the Other Mother and severing her hand. Back in her flat, Coraline finds her parents safe and sound.
The next night, Coraline discovers that her task is not yet done. The Other Mother's severed hand, which is still in Coraline's world, attempts to steal the key so the Other Mother can exact her revenge, but Coraline lures the hand to a mile-and-a-half deep well on the property and tricks it into falling in with the key, ridding the world of the danger of the Other Mother forever. |
Personally I think it depends on the 9 year old and how that child deals with "scary" images. The film "A Nightmare Before Christmas" was rated PG and I knew 3 and 4 year olds who LOVED it and others who were scared to even look at the box it came in
When Eric and Justin were 6 and 4 they could not sit through Jurassic Park - but others had no problems.
When I was young I would watch things like The Twilight Zone and LOVE it but would take a flying leap into my bed from across the room - as I was so sure monsters were under the bed - and hide under the covers! But damn, I would have been so mad if my folks wouldn't let me watch the scary stuff!_________________ "You can kinda just be. Just live your life -- and play." Adam Lambert - OUT mag. |

| I just finished Reading , After Elizabeth ,The Rise Of James Of Scotland. It is about Elizabeth 1's death and James Of Scotland reign of England. It was fascinating. I also just finished reading The Girl With No Shadow , the sequel to Chocolat by Joanne Harris. I love her books they have a very mystical quality. Colin says Coraline depends on the maturity of the kid. He saw Nightmare Before Christmas at a young age. maybe that explains a lot... |

| Thanks..............I'd try to read it before I leave but I'm not sure I have the time. I'll take it with me and ask her Mom or maybe Mom wants to read it first. I don't think it would scare her though. |

| I'm almost finished with "Paths of Glory" by Jeffrey Archer. It's based on the life of George Mallory who perished on Mt. Everest in 1924 while attempting to be the first to summit and whose body was found on the mountain just 600 ft below the summit in 1999. Interesting story about being so focused and competitive in a sport that is so much at the mercy of nature in every way. |

| OOH I love Jeffrey Archer. I will have to read that. I just finished THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett. IT WAS EXCELLENT. I could not put it down. It is about several families and their maids during the civil rights era. |

| I just put "The Help" on reserve at the library. I read the synopsis and it looked very interesting. I'm looking forward to reading it! I am a big fan of Jeffrey Archer's writing. I think I have read almost all of his books. |

Yes, yes I used to read Jeffrey Archer a lot but kind of forgotten about him. Did you ever read Kane and Abel and as the Crow Flies? I think I will go through and read those of his I've not read. I am now reading CUTTING FOR STONE by Abraham Verghese. The story is really good but I am having a hard time getting through because the main characters are Doctors. I am kind of squeamish of Doctors. |

| There are waiting lists for "The Help" at the two libraries I use, but I'm hoping that those before me like the book so well that they finish it quickly! I've read both "Kane and Abel" and "As the Crow Flies." I liked both, but especially "Kane and Abel." Did you read it? I've also read the two others in that trilogy. Have you read any books by Ann Perry? An acquaintance mentioned her as one of her favorite authors and I thought I would check out her work. I see she is a very prolific author. |

| I've read all of Anne Perry. I love her. They are Victorian mysteries. She has two series going on . One With Thomas pitt and his wife Charlotte. She "helps " him out on cases. The second is det. William Monk. In addition to the mystery you have him trying to piece together the pieces of his life. He has amnesia. I love the Monk ones the best. |
